The Joe Elliott Show #330 - Transcript

Show Intro

"So as we rapidly head towards Christmas you'd think well winter's kicking in. Not so much in Dublin, Ireland where the weather this week has been up to a balmy 59 degrees. It was actually 59 degrees on Phil Collen's 59th birthday the other day. And I just had to rub it in. Apparently warmer here than California. Go figure. Welcome everyone to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. We have sixty minutes of great music tonight. Starting off with this beauty. The number one most downloaded song in the US this week. Can you believe it?."

Sweet

"So just to clarify it's actually the number one most downloaded rock song in the USA this particular week. But it's still not bad for a song that's 41 years old. It's featured on the second instalment of the Guardians Of The Galaxy movies. The second one coming out next year and the trailer was released this week and it had 81 million hits in 24 hours. The song is featured in the film. It's featured in the trailer obviously and it's been introduced to a whole new generation of people. The band is Sweet it's from their Action The Ultimate Story Collection. The song Fox On The Run."

The Ramones

"OK so sticking with the USA. Specifically the New York area. Here's two bands that stylistically couldn't be further apart."

"Before that we heard The Ramones from their collection Mania with the insanely catchy Rockaway Beach."

KISS

"Two four piece bands there from the New York area. One of whom went the whole hog with the platform boots and the comic book style superhero outfits and the face paint. And the other crowd really made an effort. Well, converse, denim jeans, leather jackets. We are of course talking about KISS and The Ramones. And the KISS song we just heard there Is That You? from the album Unmasked."

The Struts

"OK so opposite ends of the spectrum, UK style now."

"And before that we heard from their latest album Everybody Wants. The redux version. The Struts they won Band Of The Year for 2016 and rightfully so. They are fantastic. The song we just heard, one of the newer ones, A Call Away."

Pink Fairies

"When I was about 10 years old I saw that crowd play a free festival in Weston Park in Sheffield. They played in the bandstand. It was part of a week long festival of free shows that used to happen round about the late 60s/early 70s and you could almost guarantee that if there was one of those on anywhere in the UK, that would band would be playing any free festival they could get on. That band are the Pink Fairies. From the album Kings Of Oblivion the song City Kids that a few years later would be recorded by none other than Motorhead."

"This is the Joe Elliott show on Planet Rock. It's time for a little break and when we come back. What kind of overture are we gonna be listening to?. Well, I'd be a fool if I told you now."

Supertramp

"And before that we heard Supertramp from the album Even In The Quietest Moments with Fool's Overture."

Greg Lake

"Is it a little early to start playing Christmas songs?. Well, not that particular song it's not, because very, very sadly just a couple of days ago the writer and performer of that song passed away a the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer. His name is Greg Lake. Of course you probably know him from E.L.P.. Emerson, Lake and Palmer. He was also with King Crimson. But that one of the best Christmas songs of all time. I Believe In Father Christmas."

Steely Dan

"OK, over to the showbiz kids themselves. This is Steely Dan."

"And before that from the album The Showbiz Kids The Steely Dan Story we heard Kid Charlemagne."

Roxy Music

"They had some marvellous singles in their time didn't they. They are Roxy Music from the album Country Life that is All I Want Is You."

The Tubes

"Well if ever a song title rang true at this time of year, it would be this one. This is The Tubes."

"And before that from the album called remote Control we heard The Tubes all the way from San Francisco with TV Is King."

Sensational Alex Harvey Band

"From the 1974 album The Impossible Dream that is the Sensational Alex Harvey Band with a song called River Of Love. Which goes very nicely with the river of mud that is flowing round the back of my place right now. It may be unseasonably warm right now but it is bringing in the rain. It's like being in Seattle here."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. Been a pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week god willing at the same time."

"Until then I'm gonna leave you with this bit of magic and let's make some more next week. From his second album, the title track. Pat Travers Makin' Magic. Till next week see ya!."
