Sandman/103 GBF Rocks - Phil Collen Interview Quotes

Hysteria Album 29th Anniversary

"I didn't know that. Wow. that's really cool. Wow."

Does it seem like a distant memory?

"Well, obviously I forgot the date, but actually I'd stopped drinking. That was the first tour I ever went out and was like stone cold sober. So you know I haven't had a drink since then actually. So that's pretty cool."

Was the first night of the tour scary?

"It was different yeah. I do remember that absolutely because you know you get so used to. Not going on stage drunk but just having you know Dutch courage as they call it. And it's a different thing when you stop drinking and that completely. So yeah it was different. And I remember feeling well this is a little weird. And then I got into it and then I realised my playing got better. My playing, my singing and then I started developing a confidence based on that. So no it was actually really cool. It was actually a really nice change really. It was really, really nice."

1987 Evansville, IN Show

"Yes. That was the Hysteria tour. That was the first time we done that. Yeah sure. (Tesla) Definitely yeah, There you go. They were the first band to play on our stage actually. They were the sacrificial lamb. So yeah very cool."

1988 Robert Plant Story

"Well yeah he actually. We used to, in that tour, the Hysteria tour. We used to get to the In The Round stage. You know we had to get out there. So we had to get in these laundry hampers. And Robert Plant came to see us in Chicago. He said 'I'll take you out there'. And we said no way. So yeah he actually put a hat on and I think like a scarf on. A jacket and wheeled us out there. So he was in the middle of this sold out arena in Chicago and there's Robert Plant and no one even knew who it was. So it was great and we were hidden in this laundry hamper."

2016 US Summer Tour

"It has yeah. We're actually you know just finishing up a break right now. But yeah we're back on it. It's pretty consistent and we're having a blast. We know both bands really well and yeah it's just fantastic."

Def Leppard Studio Album

"I think bands stopped putting out new material and we didn't. It's great. I think it's great being both. You know we are a classic rock band because we've been around for years. You know I've been in the band 34 years or something like that. You know all the stuff from Pyromania onwards was, you know, that's definitely classic rock."

"So no I think it's great to have both like I consider us a very current and a new band as well. But we also are classic rock. So that works great for us."
