Def Leppard won the American Music Award for Favourite Heavy Metal Artist in 1989 and had their award accepted by Gene Simmons of KISS.

The 16th annual ceremony took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 30th January 1989.

KISS bassist/singer Gene Simmons presented the award category and accepted on behalf of the band who were in Holland at the time recording 'Adrenalize'.

The band won two awards and were also nominated for two more. This remains their only win at a major US awards show.
