VH1 Classic On Tap - Joe Elliott Interview Quotes

Pyromania Residency/Album Sessions

"The thing is we say a lot of things on the fly because the industry being what it is you just make stuff up as you go along. And we weren't really sure what we were gonna do. We knew that the Vegas crowd wanted us back and we just thought well you know we'll probably do it this year because what else are we gonna do. But then we had this brainstorm towards the end of last year. To get together at my place over in Dublin, Ireland and start writing some new material. And we thought well if we get together for February and see how it turns out, because we're notoriously slow towards the writing, we might have two or three things on the go. We came out of there with like 12 songs in various different stages of finish. You know some of them are finished and some of them are tunes with la la la over the top of them. Long story short we're gonna back together in May and do a bit more before we rehearse for the tour and then we're gonna get together again after the tour and start really putting the finishing touches on what will be a new album."

"So we thought you know what, what do we really wanna do. Do we wanna go in and do Pyromania. Which we can do at any time. Or do we wanna - while we're on a roll, get this new music in the can and have a new record out hopefully for next year. So you know everything like that gets put on the back burner a little bit when all of a sudden you become very fruitful with the writing department. You don't take that for granted because it may not be as important in the world of music any more to write new stuff. But for our souls as human beings and musicians if we can't write new songs any more then I don't think there'd be any point in doing this because I've no problem going around the world playing PSSOM to everybody that wants to hear it. But at the same time we have to be indulged to make new music because otherwise there would have been no PSSOM back in 1987 you know. So it's an interesting way of looking at things but for us you know it's very important that we have to keep writing. So that became a big priority for us this tour and finishing the album off." (November/December - mentioned later whilst talking about Black Star Riders.)
