News - Sleigh Bells Pick Def Leppard Song On BBC Radio 1

Monday, 12th March 2012

Animal.

US noise-pop duo Sleigh Bells appeared on the Annie Nightingale show on BBC Radio 1 last week and chose Def Leppard's song Animal as one of their favourites.

Guitarist Derek Miller chose the track as part of the "The Music That Made Me" feature.

This was a rare play for the band on this station as they are now more likely to be played on Radio 2. You can listen to the audio of the show for three more days on the BBC iPlayer.

BBC Radio 1 - Sleigh Bells Interview Quote

Derek Miller

"Oh yeah, This is definitely my pick. I love Def Leppard. I'm a massive fan. Mutt Lange too as a producer. I'm more than happy to just like steal everything I can from him. He has incredible techniques. Yeah, I think that Def Leppard's - to call them underrated is kind of strange because of how massive they were. But I think critically they're always overlooked and especially now with the way that their records are perceived but Hysteria's just like a stone cold classic in my book."

"I don't know there's this melancoly part of them that I guess is - it's kind of specifically British. I think people forget that that was a huge part of what resonated with people in the States. You know because they're just sort of like supposed to be this hair metal band. But there's something else there at least to my ears. You know it's not just Pour Some Sugar On Me, it's like Love Bites, I don't know, the lyrics are a little generic, I get it, but I just love the band."

Alexis Krauss (Vocals)

"In Animal the verses are just so different from the choruses. The way the song just like opens up. I love the dynamic too."

Derek Miller

"It's genius song writing as well in terms of the craft. (Guitars) Yeah it was Steve Clark and Phil Collen and Phil Collen is a huge reference for me on a lot of the guitar sounds for our new record. I definitely took a lot of tips from him."
