Adelaide, SA - Fan Reviews

Fan Review - By The Thundergod

Well, it was a sensational show! What more can I say. The withdrawal of Nine Lives and the inclusion of Go made up for the set being one song shorter than Perth and Bad Actress being the dropped song.

The Galvatrons were pretty good. They performed well and played out to the crowd better than I expected. A worthy addition to the tour. I'm sure they will remember touring with Def Leppard and Cheap Trip for a long time. A bunch of nutters, they rocked hard and I think many in the crowd enjoyed their set. The 80s Rock revival is very much happening! And it's a good thing. Good show guys. The Superman intro was pretty cool too!

Cheap Trick were excellent. The Guitarist is quite flamboyant, throw out more guitar picks than the crowd expected! Very popular, I have three myself! Playing all their main hits, including a few I'd never heard of. The crowd favourite I thought was The Flame, giving us a chance to sing and really get warmed up for what was to come later in the night. If You Want My Love and I Want You To Want ME, were huge too. Dream Police went off massively too. They rock hard for a bunch of bloke who are old then the Lep's!

Now I came to the best bit... DEF LEPPARD - With the Viv's 1992 solo playing over the Visual feast of the bands back catalogue and winding us up as they appeared on stage and we were off! I was standing against the fence right in front of Phil. Mate can he play the guitar! they blasted off with Rocket followed by Animal and the surprisingly well receive C'mon C'mon. Foolin' went off as expected then came Make Love Like A Man which the crowd really enjoyed. Then came the best surprise of the night, GO! This went OFF!!! I have a video now on YouTube and you can see they rock harder than ever. Phil loves the attention and enjoys playing up the crowd.

The pace slowed after that, Love Bites was sweet before they donned acoustic guitars and wandered down the stage extension for Two Steps Behind. Actually well received and impressive crowd participation. The acoustic intro to Bringin' On The Heartbreak was good too, many people singing along. Then came Switch 625! This was the highlight of my night! We finally got the best drummer in the world to show us just why he is exactly that! And I have uploaded another video of the finale of that on YouTube too. Hysteria was next, followed by Armageddon It and a wildly enjoyed Photograph. Then it was time for Sugar! Obviously the crowd favourite of the night I'd say! Playing the single intro this time around.

Last Sunday was Rick Allen's Birthday, so we sang Happy Birthday to my hero after Joe had told a story about his celebrating his sixteenth birthday opening for AC-DC! WOW! Was wonderful. He's such a nice bloke, very humble. He uttered those Four little word that mean so much, and Rock of Ages finished the main set. We spent the next five minutes calling "Encore"! Before they came back on and Joe said "I've got one more thing to say to you Adelaide: Do you wanna' get rocked?"! It was a sensational night and Joe promised us that they'd be back again, and that it wouldn't be another 16 years. I got one of Phil's steel picks and shook Sav's hand when he gave me his pick too, saying "Thank's guys!" WOW!!!! Anyway, a great night was had by all and I can't wait until they come out again, or I can catch them when I go the the UK next year :) Hope the rest of you enjoy them as much as we have. Rock On, and Let's Get Rocked!

THEY ARE BACK!! - Def Leppard finally included Adelaide on the tour to Australia and they didn't disappoint, the show was full of energy right from the start and was a great set list, maybe a bit short, but great, Love bites was well done and the solo work at the end of the song was brilliant, to include Switch was a great effort as this was written during there first record and good to see it live, the crowd was modest with alot just enjoying the music but to me Joe feeds of the crowd getting involved which he tries hard to do, they are great and the highlight was everybody singing happy birthday to Rick, good to see that Steve Clark isn't forgotten as a number of times he's picture flashes on the big screen, on that the stage was anything flash but the way they did there show was awesome. Well done and see you next time.

Cheap Trick where also brillant, playing all there biggest hits and really enjoying the company of the crowd, a good chioce of a warm up band, as well as The Galvatrons, for a young band where just as good.

Cheap Trick set a high standard of hugely entertaining power pop with 50 minutes of sensational back to back stuff; the best I have seen in four shows over 20 years with Robin and Rick at a real high level and a lot of fun in the set, as always. So Leppard had some ground to cover to match this and I don't think they achieved it.

This is coming from a long time fan and not one that jumped on around the time of Hysteria, which would be the large majority of Australian fans....who didn't really get into this gig as they should (which Joe was a bit pissed about). As Pyromania wasn't big here, Hysteria was always going to be the album with the main focus but even with 6 or so songs from that album, I was hopeful of a bit more variety. In a full two hour set we may have got it but it really didn't vary much from 1993/1994 when they were last here. Nothing from Slang, Euphoria, X or Yeah!!!!! But I do like 'Sparkle...and appreciated some new stuff.

The sound was very good and having Viv up loud is great as his Les Paul and playing is great to here and was blown away with his extended solo outro section. The musicianship and lighting was very good but no amount of reverb could disguise the fact that Joe struggled on some (although not as much I had expected). Backing vocals, especially from Viv and Phil were terrific to cover. Its been dwelt on before but I can only imagine how huge Rick would be with all his limbs but is still a tight and powerful technician who can keep the groove really well. So I can only wish what a really diverse set would be like and look back wistfully at those from the previous tours, especially on the smaller intimate club gigs.

I know Joe despises the lyrics from earlier stuff (geez that bugs me...aren't songs meant to be like your children??) but, oh to hear a 'Satellite', 'Me and My Wine', 'Action (Not Words)' or later, 'Four Letter Word' or 'Promises'.......musically, these are sensational songs. Australian fans need to pull their finger out and check this stuff out so we can get it in a live environment. But thanks for making the effort guys. Hopefully, there will be another chance! Cheap Trick 4 out of 5 - Def Leppard 3.5 out of 5.
