Mexico City, Mexico - Fan Reviews

Fan Review - By Carlos Gonzalez

16th November marked the return of a legend to the Mexican soil. Maybe this time it helped the geographic location of our country, since it was very clear that this tour it’d be only for the US and Canada. Not to mention that the release they’re supporting with this tour is precisely an US-Canada only release. You can buy it here, only imported. That’s why me and other Mexican fans never thought that this tour will include a stop at the land of Tequila. We could only hope and wait and wait… and wait…

It’s been 8 years since that last Mexican show on April 97 during the slang tour (and I witnessed that one too) and let me tell you that I can only imagine how hard was that long waiting for other Mexican fans. In my case, my thirst for a lepp show was quenched when I attended a show in Texas in 03, but other fans here were impatiently looking forward for this day. Our hopes about a return to Mexico were only based on that phil’s statement in an recent interview where he said that the 2006 tour is expected to be “ambicious”. I don’t know if I’m being clear enough here, that comment was our only hope! And suddenly, this Mexican dates are announced… man, I had to sit down when I read that. Of course, one can travel to the US, but let me tell you that it’s not the same. It’s just not the same. You can see def wherever you want, but it’s not the same to see it at your land. That’s my main conclusion after yesterday’s show. Definitely the Def show in the US are wilder (in sexual terms) than the Mexican ones. But maybe the Mexican audience is louder. It’s part of our personality. We have a party inside us, always. We are always looking for something to celebrate, haha.

Yes, the sound acoustics it’s much better in the Auditorio Nacional. Let's not forget that this it’s the first time they play at this venue and it’s my first visit to that venue too. The past concerts in Mexico city were at the palacio de los deportes. The Palacio has an awful acoustics, due to this metal structure that functions as the roof that makes the sound rebounds everywhere.

Yes, It's was a sold out show, as expected. And I think the today's show will be a sold out too. This venue is cool, modern and appropriate for music. Joe was all wearing black, leather pants and t-shirt with some golden drawing. I couldn’t notice what it was. Phil was without shirt, savage was wearing all white and Vivian was wearing a black shirt. They all looked very happy and excited about the crowd. Savage screamed before the encore: “Mexico city, you’ve been amazing”. And it was very clear that he felt the need to say it, since he rarely takes the mic to say something. I noticed Vivian was throwing the guitar pick to the air in the middle of the song and then he caught it and continued playing. He did that various times.

There were people in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. People in suit (they must have gone to the show right after work), headbangers, pretty blonde girls. There was a little bit of everything. All the people was stand up. There was no video screen behing the drums. They only put an image, a textile, of the cover of the rock of ages collection. It looked like the video screen for the US tour but it wasn’t. There were 2 jumbo video screens, though, 1 each side of the stage. There was 4 cameras, 1 was behing phil.

Some guys in the front row had sewed the Mexican and british (union jack) flags and they were showing it to joe, and then he took it and he showed it to the audience before the encore. And during slang he wore it as a cape. It was a nice detail!!! Great idea to sew the flags! I think Phil has a new guitar. It was black with golden. I couldn’t see if it was a Jackson one, but I guess it was.

Outside the venue I bought 2 little beer mugs and 1 “caballito” (a little glass for tequila shots), all with the logo of the band. And the most original acquisition was a car plate with the rock of ages cover. That’s pretty cool.

They must have included 2 steps behind. That song was huge hit here. And adding 2 or 3 more songs would’ve been nice… Maybe they only played this number of songs due to the effort that Joe has to make, because mexico city is a higher city. It’s around 2500 meters over the sea level (1.5 miles). In an interview with a mexico city’s newspaper joe said he would have an oxygen tank behind the stage. I don’t know if he was only joking. Anyway, the show was a total success.

To introduce rock of ages, joe said: now we’ll play the title track of our latest release”.

During slang, Joe sang more raspy. It sounded very good. Phil didn’t make it to the mic for the 1st bridge of the song, he was at the front of the stage. People counted with Joe the “1, 2, 3, 4” part of the song which is sung in Spanish anyway.

At the very end, joe said his message “don’t forget us, we won’t forget you. See you next some time or mañana” (tomorrow). The audience really appreciated these words. It had a special meaning for the audience, despite he says it on every show.

I went yesterday and let me tell you it was the best show ever in the city, of course this opinion is biased but man I got such great tickets that I even have the chance to slap Rick Sav and Phil Collen hands, they opened the show with action and finished the show with "pour some sugar on me" with the same repetoir played in Las Vegas.

My favorite part of the show was when Joe try to interact with the audience in Spanish, is really cool to see these guys appreciate playing in another country, especially in Mexico. The best interpretation in my opinion was "Rocket" and "Animal" in both Viv just blasted the audience.

Finally I really look forward to hear the forthcoming album, 'cause "Rock On" sounded just amazing.

Hard to believe how time flies... just a month ago I was in Mexico City, waiting for the guys to appear on the stage, in that beautiful building called National Auditorium... by the way, if you find spelling or grammar mistakes, please excuse me, it's because of my lack of both.

As I was saying... I'm not a die hard Def Leppard fan... at least that is what I think, but then I wonder... it I'm not why did I travelled around 80 km, from one city to another, by bus and then I began an awful underground journey, with all those obnoxious men trying to touch more than your arm or hand... things down here in Mexico are quite different from other countries... I guess.

Anyhow. After 3 horrible hours on a bus, subway and then again another bus I reached my destination...next day I was enjoying a wonderful show. And at 5:00 Thursday morning wake up and go back home and to work... and I'm not a fan???

But the main thing here is: what can I tell you about the show? I have attended some, Sir McCartney's, Mr. Collins, Asia, Toto... what I admitre the most from these guys is the energy they still have. I wish I will have the same energy when I'll be in my almost 50ties.

The show was just great. The second song was "Let's get rocked" and it was incredible to be in front of one of the groups I used to listen to when I was a kid. I'm 31 now and I still feel the same when I listen to their songs. How many nowadays bands can say the same or will be able to say the same in some years from now?

I can't remember the order of the set list but all of them were simply great. Phil's guitar is one of the best I have heard. Allen's just amazing. My sister in law thinks Vivian is such a sexy man and I think the same about Rick Savage. Yes, I know their looks are not the important thing here but, forgive us, we're girls and these guys look so yummy. Thanks Def Leppard for your excellent music.
