Hamburg, Germany - Fan Reviews

Fan Review - By Martin Agervig/Anna/Fenja/Marianne

Living in Denmark it was a choice of either going to London or going to Hamburg. Because of the money situation we opted for Hamburg. We being three girls and me (Martin) you can imagine that I had a great time.

We left Arhus at 12.20 (10 minutes after our tickets arrived with courier service ("thanks" DHL...) and five hours later we found ourselves looking for a place to park in the city of Hamburg. As there were nowhere else to park we decided to park just behind the tour bus of the Leps!

Hamburg. As there were nowhere else to park we decided to park just behind the tour bus of the Leps! We quickly learned that Skid Row had been cancelled which was a bit of a disappointment but nothing should spoil our evening so we ventured inside. Die Grosse Freiheit must be the smallest venue Def Leppard has played for at least 20 years.

Not more than 499 Lep fans and one true Almighty fan, who quickly let everybody know that he was only there to get a glimpse of Ricky Warwick ("Scheiss-Def Leppard" I believe was the words that came out of his mouth...), had taken the opportunity to watch one of the biggest bands of the eighties perform. Ricky Warwick played about five songs (Viv accompanying him on the penultimate one) and left the stage just as quickly as he entered it.

At 20.30 the real deal entered the stage. Starting at high speed with 'Action', quickly leaping into a "sexed" up version of 'Make Love...' and continuing the travel back in time with the phenomenal 'Foolin'' people were now truly hooked. 'Women' and 'Hysteria' followed. The only song from "X" not to be scrapped from the setlist, 'Four Letter Word', was delivered with youthful energy and true Leppard sing-a-long backing vocals. ...And sang a long we did for the entire 85-minute long show. No surprises. All sure fire crowd pleasers. 'Rock Of Ages' finished the set with a thundering ending. Very end-of-set-like...

The encore was originally meant to consist of two songs but Phil's amplifier died half way through 'Love Bites' so we had to miss out on the other one. Those of you who's got the live version of 'Let's Get Rocked' from Bonn will hear a German crowd considerably larger than tonight's one chant "Zugabe, zugabe...". That means encore and irony of fate wanted that 'Let's Get Rocked' was the song that was ditched because of Phil's amplifier problems. Though we didn't get to hear them ask if we wanted to, we did get well and truly rocked. They still know how to, was the verdict of our little Danish quartet and everybody else in the very hot and very humid venue... Even though the crowd was only small the Leps still got a loud reception and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves with some good old fashioned eighties-style stadium rock.

Pre-note: After the concert we went outside in the freezing cold night and hang around their bus for about 45 minutes and was the wait worthwhile or what; One after one the band members came out, greeted us in a very friendly manner and took time to give us what we wanted: Autographs. This is my third concert but it’s the first time I got to meet them face to face and I must say they are as friendly as they seem on the telly. Even though Marianne spilled Sav’s drink and stole Stumpus’ pen they still treated us as though we were the first fans they've met for years.

During the concert Marianne managed to get hold of a plectrum that Phil threw to her and I got Sav’s. Fenja got the printed setlist that was cellotaped to the stage floor. Souvenirs that are priceless to real Lep fans as us. Thanks guys, you really made the long drive worthwhile!.

Fan Review - By Boris

First of all I was pissed off that there was no info the Leppard show would not start at 21:30 like the 2 two shows before, so I missed the beginning and the first thing I heard in front of the venue was the last solo of 'Women', and it was 20:50.

After asking some people in the crowd they told me that Leppard started at 20:30, now tell me how ****ed up is that.

I stood at the back behind the soundboard and could see the setlist and was disappointed of what I saw. What a short show!!!

However the club was packed, I guess about 500!! people probably less and you could feel that the band was (not bothered) to play to such a small crowd.

The sound was brilliant, everything was clear and ,otörhead-style loud!

After 'Rock of Ages' they came back for the encore and started with 'Love Bites'. During the song Phil left the stage!! Nobody knew why until Phil came back and you could see that his guitar was not working anymore. So he left again and at the end Joe left, too. By the time Viv was doing the Outro solo there were only him, Sav and Rick on stage.

After 'Love Bites' I expected 'Let's Get Rocked' but Joe told us that they can't do the real Leppard style anymore and so they left the stage. The whole show was about 85 minutes. And all of the crowd left totally. Hope the Berlin show will be better. Will tell you about that.
