Def Leppard At Barton Coliseum By Arkansas Gazette

A generous shot of rock served straight up was the special of the evening Tuesday at Barton Coliseum.

Both Def Leppard and opening act Tesla left pretence and posturing behind as they presented a rough-and-ready concert of hard-core guitar, heavyweight drums, and raw-edged vocals to a sellout crowd.

Members of Def Leppard have made it clear they strive to achieve perfection on their albums, since it's the one chance they have to do so and make it last.

It doesn't matter much to them that their live performances don't necessarily contain perfect harmonies or flawlessly clean guitar work.

Singer Joe Elliott proved that point by replacing perfection in vocals with unbridled energy and enthusiasm.

Sipping to every corner of the stage (a round setup that allowed for four front rows instead of one), he roared through a number of cuts from the newest album 'Hysteria' including 'Women', along with material from the monster hit 'Pyromania' and other previous albums.

Guitarists Phil Collen and Steve Clark poured out the riffs, reminiscent of the works of Queen and Led Zeppelin, which the band lists as major influences on their music.

And there was certainly no lack of rhythm from drummer Richard Allen.

Even the stage setup was straightforward, devoid of mountains of amplifiers and wires to trip over, since the band used cordless guitars.

Colored lights and a bare-bones laser show accessorized the music, which was plenty tough enough to stand on its own.
