Def Leppard @ Maple Leaf Gardens By Toronto Globe And Mail

Friday night at Maple Leaf Gardens, the triple bill of Gary Moore, Krokus and Def Leppard was no disappointment.

And even in the musical department all three acts were well above the usual standard.

Def Leppard, which ripped up the charts with its latest album, Pyromania, is a young band, and it shows.

The age range, 19 to 23 (exactly the age range of The Beatles when that band hit the charts), is a benefit.

When the band uses its youthful energy to move about the stage.

Joe Elliott, the cute blond whose voice scrapes up and down the octaves, is the dynamo at the centre.

And a sharp dresser as well, with a Union Jack T-shirt and shiny leather pants.

A refreshingly colourful changes from the usual heavy metal dungeon clothes.

The combination of Def Leppard's pop charm and heavy metal anthems is unexpectedly winning sort of like the Bay City Rollers and AC/DC rolled into one.

Where the band still lacks experience, though, is in stage craft.
