Thursday, 10th April 1980
Prev  |  Next
  • Location / Sheffield, England
  • Venue / Sheffield City Hall (Oval Hall)

The first show by the band in this city since February 1980 on the club tour.

The first time at this venue.

Another show on the On Through The Night UK and World tour with Magnum and local/young acts in support.

The first show by Phil Collen in Sheffield as a member of Def Leppard.

Phil had played the venue before Def Leppard did in 1980 as a member of Girl when they opened for UFO (28th January 1980) and for Pat Travers (on 24th March 1980) who Lep would go on to support in the USA.

The venue is located in the city centre in Barker's Pool square and just one street away from the site of The Wapentake club and also close to the O2 Academy which the band played in 1980 as the Top Rank.

It was opened in September 1932.

The building is also close to many of the venues the band played in their early days and just over half a mile north of the Spoon Factory where they first rehearsed in 1977-1979.

The building actually contains three venues with the 2,271 capacity Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall being the largest and where the main concerts take place.

The opener for this show was Heritage, a local Sheffield based New Wave Of British Heavy Metal Band.

They featured Steve Johnson (lead vocals/guitar), Steve Barratt (guitars), Fasker Johnson (bass) and Pete Halliday (drums).

They released an album called 'Remorse Code' in 1981.

A show, as explained below, attended by all of the band's family and friends. The first time the band had played this venue and as headliners coming just over a year since Joe had written on the side wall that they would play here in 1980.

Animal Instinct 1987 Biograph Quotes

"The biggest high for Leppard on that tour was headlining at Sheffield City Hall."

"For Joe, in particular, it was his dream come true, five years after Deaf Leopard played that legendary imaginary show with Thin Lizzy."

"One night, back in in the early Spoon Factory days, Joe and Pete Willis were walking past Sheffield City Hall after a late rehearsal; Joe stopped and scribbled on the wall "Def Leppard will play here in 1980"."

"On April 10, they made good on that promise, with a, beaming battalion of Leppard Moms and Dads in attendance."
